During the summer of 2018 we worked again in partnership with Premed Projects to deliver four careers days. We introduced a new element of clinical case scenarios and practical sessions which the students really enjoyed.
Like last year the students were from across the globe and enthused to learn more about a medical career. We enlisted the help and support of a number of doctors who spoke about the realities of their career in medicine. Below are some of the specialties across the four days:
- General Practice
- Aviation and aerospace medicine
- Intensive care medicine
- Military medicine
In addition to the doctors speaking about their careers and a typical working day they also included clinical case scenarios relating to their profession. The students worked together in small groups to understand the cases. This provided them with a glimpse into some of the cases we might see during a working day. We also added practical sessions which they thoroughly enjoyed too:
- How to perform a basic history and examination
- Performing basic investigative tests such as urine dipstick testing
The students as always enjoyed interacting with doctors from a range of specialties and points in their careers. They particularly enjoyed working in small groups to discuss the clinical cases which gave them an insight to being a doctor. An opportunity to practice examinations and clinical skills also enabled them to understand more about a doctor’s role.
