Applying to get into medical school can be a daunting and overwhelming experience. You will no doubt be aware of the stiff competition around you, but with the right advice it can be easy to understand the process and how to become a doctor.

Selecting Your Subjects

You will need to have studied the correct subjects at A-Level, which usually consist of mainly science subjects. Chemistry and biology are most commonly required, with physics and maths also favourable. If you are applying without any of these subjects, then you are likely to be asked to study a foundation year course before embarking on your Medical degree.

Choosing A University

The first stage in applying is through The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). You will need to first select which medical school you are applying to, so will need to check your eligibility based on their entry criteria and your grades or predicted grades.

Work Experience

To show your chosen medical school you mean business, it is important to have some form of experience in a hospital or medical environment. It could be a care home or clinic, but wherever you choose to do voluntary work, take plenty of notes and detail your key takeaways from your observations in your application.

Personal Statement

This is your opportunity to explain what it means to you to enter into the medical profession. What exactly is your reason for wanting to become a doctor and which skills and qualities do you think make you a strong candidate? These skills and qualities aren’t your academic accomplishments, but your personal qualities. The best way to get into medical school is to ensure you demonstrate the traits that make a good doctor: the ability to work as part of a team, to make difficult decisions, to be respectful and compassionate in your dealings with people, have excellent interpersonal as well as problem solving skills. To guarantee you maximise your potential, you might want to take advantage of the personal statement review service from DreamSmartTutors. Experts can take a look at your statement and advise on how you can enhance or amend it to give yourself the best shot at success.
